Senate Commerce Committee Reaffirms Low Power Radio Service

On June 28th, advocates of low power FM (LPFM) radio, a service used by churches, schools, activist organizations, emergency responders, and hundreds of communities, applauded the Senate Commerce Committee's vote to expand the low power FM radio service.  The vote approved an amendment to a major telecommunications bill currently before the Commerce Committee.  This vote marks a major step towards the expansion of low power FM radio to the large cities of the United States, and potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of other communities across this country.  The vote also affirms the Commerce Committee's previous support of LPFM in 2004 and 2005.  The Prometheus Radio Project reports on one of the biggest chances this year to expand low power FM radio.  They're asking you to hit all of your lists with this note, and to call your senators yourselves, especially if your senator is on the senate commerce committee.  Check out the press release.

WRYR Gets Mention as County's Rules on Developers Begin with Some Stumbles

While the county recently began requiring builders to hold public meetings on their projects and pass on the comments to county officials, the results have been mixed, according to some community activists and others attending the meetings.  Developers are required to record minutes and provide them to the attendees.  WRYR recorded a recent meeting about the Lee Farm proposed development.  This article INCORRECTLY states that WRYR provided the developer with a copy of the audio recording of the meeting to create a formal record.  WRYR did NOT provide the developer a copy of the audio recording of the meeting.

Annual Homeless Marathon Live on WRYR

A three-hour segment of the 9th Annual Homeless Marathon will air on WRYR February 15 beginning at 7 pm.  The marathon is a 14-hour live marathon, starting at 7 pm Wednesday, February 15, going through the night and ending at 9 am Thursday, February 16.  This year the marathon will originate from Atlanta and is being hosted by 100,000 watt Radio Free Georgia, WRFG.

The mission of the marathon is to give the homeless a voice on the airwaves.  The broadcast booth is always outside in the dead of winter to dramatize the plight of people who have nowhere to go in the cold.  During the 14 hours, you’ll hear from experts on a wide variety of topics (e.g., access to food, public housing, health care); hear panels of homeless people (e.g., homeless elders, youth, vets, disabled, mentally ill) and will take calls from around the country.

You can find more information at www.homelessnessmarathon.org.
