Southern Development Foundation and Prometheus Radio Project Present:

Our Third Low Power Radio Barn Raising Conference!
November 15th to 17th in Opelousas, Louisiana.

Civil Rights group will launch its new radio station with a master class for new low power radio stations. In the spirit of neighbors pulling together to put up a new building, we'll gather low power radio applicants, journalists, radio engineers, students, lawyers, musicians, activists and folks from across the western U.S. to raise the antenna mast, build the studio ... and flip on the station switch! The conference is sponsored by the Prometheus Radio Project and hosted by Southern Development Foundation, Opelousas Branch.

Workshops:

Radio Production
Local News Gathering
Internet Radio
Filling Out Applications
Interference Issues
Fundraising
New Technologies
Basic and Advanced Audio
Towers
Radio History
Youth Programs
Basic and Advanced RF (radio) Engineering
Media and Democracy Campaigns
The Congress and The Courts
Studio Building
Programming Policy
The Weird Sociology of the FCC
Outreach for Your New Station...

and of course, the Radio Barn Raising, with tips on selecting radio station equipment, purchasing, and building a low power station from microphone to antenna!

The Southern Development Foundation, Opelousas Branch has been fighting for civil rights for over a quarter of a century. They have worked for school reform, Community Supported Agriculture, and they host the largest Zydeco music festival in the world every year in Opelousas. In the very place where zydeco music was born, almost every station on the dial ignores the regions cultural heritage in favor of cookie cutter automated stations that play "Classic Rock" and "Young Country." The Southern Development Foundation is ready to expand its advocacy for the people and culture of Opelousas into the world of radio!

The event will allow new programmers to meet and new stations to compare notes on fundraising and equipment. In addition, broadcast professionals can share their skills with the new low power radio station licensees. We will also plan the course for media activism for the next year, and plot for the continued fight to put the media into the hands of the people and communities.

To obtain more information or register, go to our web site or write info@prometheusradio.org. Conference cost is $75 for the weekend, but no one is EVER turned away for lack of funds. Contact Prometheus by phone or email to obtain a fee waiver or reduction. Register for the conference at http ://www.prometheusradio.org/barnregistration.shtml

See you there!

Re-Power the Tower!!!

WRYR-LP is back on the air!!! Our broadcast antenna has been repaired and re-installed 80 feet above Lowes Wharf Marina in Sherwood, Maryland. The mount design has been improved and strengthened to withstand the best ole' Mother Nature should throw at it. The antenna had been damaged by the violent storms that recently came through the mid-Chesapeake Bay area, which also toppled the historic Wye Oak tree. Also installed was a new and improved transmitter to provide you a clear and crisp 100 watt signal. The Total Power of Low Power FM has returned to WRYR-LP. Many thanks go out to all the volunteers and contractors for the hard work and effort as well as a big thanks to Paul and Tracy at Lowes Wharf Marina for their kind patience during the repair evolution.

WRYR-LP can again focus on beginning full programming for our community. We will be featuring shows on the environment, local issues, waterman issues, organic gardening, healing arts, birding, local sports, , and even yoga. In addition to this line-up, WRYR-LP will also offer music programming to reflect the rich diversity of our community. From gospel to jazz, blue grass to punk, oldies, world music, zydeco and Celtic, you will hear a wide spectrum of music in our line-up. Please return to our site in the near future, as we will be listing programs, air times and other information.
